“Who am I…?” Sound like a good way to begin a prayer? Sometimes we can become so worried about the format and eloquence of our prayer, that we lose the authenticity if we’re not careful. David’s prayer in 2 Samuel 7:18 is so refreshing to read. David wasn’t praying out of duty, obligation, to impress anyone, or for any other reason except to share his heart and thoughts with his Lord! Friend, it's a great reminder for us when we pray that we don’t always need to have a prepared prayer ready, or have it all perfectly woven together in advance. Our Father in Heaven knows our heart, and thoughts in advance, and desires true fellowship and intimacy with us! Let’s go back to David’s opening prayer…” Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far? I think it's clear that David understood a couple really important things about his Father in Heaven. First, he knew that the Lord God is vast, supreme, and powerful and he, in comparison is tiny and quite limited. The second thing David realized is that all the blessings in his life were attributed to the Lord God’s faithful presence in his life! Those are two very important points that we all can learn from in our own prayers and quiet moments! David also understood another significant truth in verse 20 of the same chapter, he prays, “ for you know Your servant , O Lord God!” Why is this significant? David knew that he was the creation, and that his Father in Heaven…was the Creator who knew his intimate thoughts, ideas, deeds, etc. Friend, knowing this about our Heavenly Father should bring us all to a deeper, more transparent place in our prayer life. It led David to write in verse 22, “For this reason you are great O Lord God, for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You…”
Thank you Father God for your love and devotion to us, and for sending your only son Jesus Christ to be our Lord and Savior. Thank you for your grace and understanding and for all the blessings in our life. Amen! Thanks for letting me share, Randy Young
